UN General Assembly (UNGA 77) has placed Climate Change on top of agenda

UNGA 77 comes at a critical moment for climate and the future of our planet. The impacts of climate change have been observed across the world such as devastating floods, heat waves, and drought. This indicate how critical is climate change, and urgent to be tackled.

UN General Assembly President Csaba Kőrösi addressed the general debate of the UN General Assembly’s 77th session by stating, “Climate change has triggered heatwaves, floods, and droughts while unsustainable consumption and production have left scars across our environment”

Antonio Guterres has made it clear that the polluters must pay. Through his speech, he called upon all developed economies by put the fossil fuels producer, investors and enablers on notice. His advice focused on motivating the developed countries to tax the windfall profits of the fossil fuel companies, in which those funds can redirected in two ways: to countries suffering loss and damage caused by the climate crisis, and to people struggling with rising food and energy prices.

Why climate change on top agenda of UNGA 77, and how it can influence decisions of COP27?

Simply put what leaders do and do not commit at UNGA this year will have a profound effect on whether COP27 is successful later this fall.

At COP27, it will a moment of where will be an understanding of the areas where action and funding for adapting to climate impacts are most needed. It is expected that the promised flows of finance have to be made to happen. Another key point to expect in COP27 is to get the mechanisms for Article 6 governing carbon markets in a good state of implementation. Following the establishment of a set of rules to govern the use of carbon market under article 6.

This clearly shows that this diplomatic assembly can have a great impact on COP27 at Sharm el-Sheik in Egypt.

What to expect from COP27?

This conference of the parties of the UNFCCC will be held in African country, Egypt. This will influence the agenda on some degree. This is indicated by the hashtag for the conference which is #Just and ambitious. In other words, we can expect the focus is the global climate justice.

The Egyptian government announced that the COP27 programme would cover different themes. Each day will address a specific theme

1. Finance Day            2. Adaptation Day                       3. Water Day                         4. Decarbonization Day            5. Science Day
